In my opinion and in total honesty, I don’t think The Giver movie adaptation really deserves so much hate. Sure a lot of elements were changed from book to film but what matters most is if at least most of the message comes through, which it did.

Love in this movie is not just romantic love it shows that you need emotions, good and bad things, and experiences to have a functioning society. And Jonas not being 12 makes more sense because then a huge chunk of the movie would be spent on explaining why 12 year olds have jobs.
